MTVA Awards & After Party

Some pics from saturday night... Me DJ'ing with Wyclef hosting...

Right now Im still in sydney, chilling after the awards weekend before I head to gold coast for a solo DJ set at Bedroom tomorrow night (Tues 29th).
The weekend was awesome starting off with the crazy Mile High Gig from Auckland to Sydney. Scribe and Dizzee Rascal performed on the flight (I have some pics and video from that to post up when I get home).
Next was the actual awards (which to be honest got a little tiring so I left early to get a meal and five minutes rest before the after party kicked off!). The red carpet was pretty fun and cool to see some of the celebs come out. I was stoked to see Leona Lewis in the flesh, she is stunning! And props to Scribe for picking up the favourite NZ artist award!
Then the real party kicked off at The Hilton where I dj'ed at the 2 after parties. The first one was upstairs and open to mostly industry and some fans who had scored tickets. I started just before all the people arrived from the awards show and stepped it into full gear once the room packed out. Once things got really going then Wyclef grabbed the mic to host over my set {see pics above) and people went mad. He has crazy energy!
That set was very short but high energy and then we got whisked away downstairs to start the exclusive artists and vip guest party in the Hilton's Marble bar. Special guests of the night were Wyclef and Eve who both got on the mic and ripped it. Eve's DJ Saigon played a reggae set and then spun the mashup styles for a bit aswell, she was dope! Then I jumped back on and played some more fun tunes to the excitable MTV crowd. It was the shit. Really great party. Some blurry ass party pics to follow lol :) Thanks MTV!

Scribe x Wyclef

Scribe recorded a guest verse for the remix of Wyclef Jean's 'Fast Car' single in sydney last night. Not sure what the release details will be but that's some pretty cool news.
Shot Scribe.

Monday Monday

I went to the Auckland Regional Hip-Hop Dance Champs on friday. That was pretty mean. I hadn't been to one before. All the crews were dope. I dont have a list of them so I'll skip doin a roll call and just give a shout out to the organizers and all the dancers for puttin on a cool event!
Did the mad boring office work catch up today. Sent out some invoices and gathered all my GST info for my accountant to go through. Having a good accountant is VERY important for all working musicians!
Still, I did get to do some fun shit today too, looking through some new clothes and picking out gear to rock for the MTV Awards in ozzie this weekend. Im DJing the after party so that should be fun too. Gotta take the camera and get some pics to share!
Before I get to the awards though I have a one-off gig at Heaven Bar in Whangarei this thursday night. If you're in the area be sure to head down there and join me for a 2hr DJ spot playin new and old hip-hop and party jams. I'll probably start just after midnight. Choice

"..stole this beat off of P-Money's bebo"

If you were paying attention last week you would have seen my beat blog post [jam hot] nestled in there amongst the Tour Of Dirty wrap up ramblings. Well I also posted that same beat on my bebo page and my friend Nikki Montana (never one to let a decent beat go to waste!) picked it up and threw it straight back to me with vocals attached!
Gotta give it to her for seizing the opportunity to scoop up a hot track ;)
Take a listen to Nikki's version: Nikki Montana - Jam Hot

Word on the street says Nikki has a solid little mixtape in the works too..

Savage - Doin Big Things!

So the story goes a little somethin' like this...
Savage records the catchy single 'Swing' for his debut album back in 2005. The track becomes a number one smash in NZ, holding down the top spot for 5 weeks. His record label Dawnraid also scores a release for the single and accompanying album (Moonshine) in Australia where the song sees continued success.
Fast forward to 2007 and 'Swing" gets included in the soundtrack and (rather importantly) on the DVD menu of the widely popular Hollywood film "Knocked Up". Somewhat surprisingly (or maybe not so!) youtube hits for the 'Swing' video start to increase and Savage is soon sitting at around 1,000,000 views across the multiple uploads of the clip. The single then starts to rise up the US iTunes store charts as people start to seek out this hit track and download it legally.
Which brings us up to today where we are hearing news of a label bidding war in the U.S. for the rights to Savage as an artist! According to the Dawnraid Blog the negotiations are between TVT, Koch Records, Konvict Muzik/ Interscope & Universal Republic. This is pretty much as big as it gets for any upcoming hip-hop artist! Stay tuned for more news as it comes to hand.
Big congrats to Savage & Dawnraid on these incredible developments.

Mareko - Gotta Go

Mareko is back with this smooth single. I liked seeing the home video behind the scenes clips from all his overseas trips. Nice one.

The Wealthy Musician

At a seminar at a local library, someone asked, "how do I make a lot of money from music?"

My guess is that at last week's seminar, the one on growing orchids, no one raised his hand and said, "how do I make a lot of money growing orchids?"

Sure, people make money growing orchids. Some people probably get rich growing orchids. Not many though. And my guess is that the people who do make money gardening probably didn't set out to do so.

Music is much the same way. The best musicians make money, but mostly as a side effect, not as a direct result of setting out to use music to make a profit. It's just too long a ramp up time, too frustrating and too uncertain to be the best path to make a living.

If it makes you happy (and your audience happy) it's a great place to start. Step by step you get better at it, and then you discover the ancillary benefits. But the benefits kick in best when you don't set out to achieve them.

(This is my adaptation of a great blog post by Mr. Seth Godin)

Was Mean

Oh yeah, Gisborne was mean! Thanks to all the people that came along to the party on saturday. And a big shout to all the crew at Soho. Best solo show in AGES! We're on a roll at the mo... give thanks :)

Clockin' Lotsa Dollars, We All Got Gold...

Sir Mix-A-Lot : Posse On Broadway

The Cool Kids just dropped a new joint. As usual its heavily 80's inspired (aint nuthin wrong with that!), this time they take reference from the Sir Mix-A-Lot underground classic "Posse On Broadway" (yes, Sir Mix-A-Lot was known for more than just liking Big Butts). Both these joints are made for the car system, make sure you got your subs hooked up right!

Spy Glasses

I spotted this interesting gadget over at Boing Boing.net :
"ThinkGeek has started carrying $100 remote-control cam-glasses with a discreet, 1.3 megapixel camera built into the temple. This is the beginning of the end for photography bans. Once these things become easy to install -- undetectably -- in a pair of ordinary glasses, the idea of stopping people from snapping photos in museums, clubs, stores and airport checkpoints is dead."

Its kind of a given that privacy is out the door nowadays, not only can people easily snap your picture without your knowledge they'll also be able to do THIS in a few years...

Selling Beats?

An upcoming producer/beatmaker emailed me asking about what his rights are when selling beats. I wrote him back this fairly simple explanation of how it goes down.
This is by NO means the FULL story and I would encourage anyone serious about getting into the music biz to find a proper entertainment lawyer to help them with contracts etc. but this should help give you a basic understanding of whats goin on when you sell a beat...

Firstly, the NZ music industry is not like america. People very rarely 'buy' beats. But if you've got people willing to pay you for your production then by all means get paid.

But you need to understand this first:

There are 2 parts to copyright in music.
The first part is the 'Publishing'.
The 2nd part is the 'Master'.

The Publishing belongs to the songwriters. If you have written some original music (ie made a Beat) then you control 100% of the publishing in that compositon. But when someone adds lyrics to it then the Publishing is shared between all the writers; ie 50% for the beat, 50% for the lyrics.

The Master copyright belongs to whomever owns the recording of the song (or beat). When you sell a beat you are selling your Master copyright to that person (or record label) so they can own the final recording that they make with your music. (Keep in mind you still retain your share of the Publishing, NEVER agree to sell the Publishing).

So to put it simply, you can get paid to give somebody a recording of your beat that they can record their vocals over and then use, sell or perform however they want. But you are still entitled to your agreed share of the publishing income. (Publishing income is money earnt from the performance of your music; including radio, tv, live performance and mechanical royalties. There is a company called APRA/AMCOS who collect this money on behalf of songwriters. It is free to become a member of APRA. Check their website www.APRA.co.nz)

I hope this brief explanation helps. Please do your research and get proper advice before entering into any contracts.

Stay In The Mix

Thats the thing with blogging man, you gotta stay on top of it. Gotta post something everyweek, if not every day! My last weekend was dope. We had heaps of fun on tour in the south island visiting Nelson on thursday, Christchurch on friday and Dunedin on sunday. All the shows were dope (christchurch was maybe the lamest of the whole tour but we still got love for those who came out to party!). Unfortunately being away on tour meant I missed out on 3 of my friends birthdays (big shout out to E-Double, Phil and Kirk who all celebrated theirs over the weekend).
This Tour Of Dirty experience has really got me amped about performing live again and in the spirit of that me and the boys sam & dave are lining up another tour in a couple months time. More info about that as we pull it together..

The other dope thing about touring is how it can inspire the writing process. One thing feeds the other.. you're at home writing and then you wanna go out and perform it, and then you come home and wanna write more stuff after that...

In my case I came home and started making some new beats. Here's one of them that i particularly like. Have a listen lemme know what you think..
