I was just randomly searching for videos of myself on youtube today (as you do) and I came across something very special. The following clips are from the 1997 New Zealand ITF DJ Battle. This battle was held in Auckland at a long since demolished venue called Luna on Symonds St. This was my very first DJ competition and only my second time on ANY stage, ANYwhere (besides the school talent quest, lol, but more on that another time). I was 19 years old, nervous as f*ck and totally psyched to be up there.
WARNING: These performances may only be of interest to the super scratch-nerds amongst us, so for the rest of you I present... my hair. *dies*
yes, that's DJ Sir-vere doing the time-keeping. He also promoted this event and was head honcho of the NZ chapter of the International Turntablist Federation. He's the man responsible for the most well organized and well attended DJ Battles ever held in NZ. Circa '97-'02(?). Thanks Phil.
...cutting up Kraftwerk originals in '97. Granted parts of these routines are terrible, but hey it was my first time, and I placed 4th in the country. Not a bad start for the young fella.

ReplyDeleteThis footage is great. I've never seen it before. Props to Fobtronics for uploading it.
ReplyDelete4th in NZ on your first ITF attempt is solid as! I've done a post of this footage on my blog as well asking the scratch nerds to comment. I liked it a lot. I hope you don't mind the re-post.
