For this I was imagining Chic meets Stardust mixed with a little bit of pop & rap.

P-Money is our most successful turntablist- cum-DJ-cum-producer, with a hand in the rise of some of New Zealand's biggest hip-hop names, including Scribe.

P-Money's own albums have also been satisfactory, as much for his experimentation with beats as for roping in hip-hop collaborators. But with Everything, P-Money not only surprises, but - and there's no other way to put this - he astonishes.

The title nicely sums up the content. There's familiar hip-hop (Big Things with Scribe, PNC and David Dallas, ironically the weakest track), but also funk, disco, rock and R&B - with 21st century R&B production informing the whole album.

The title track with Vince Harder - who has one of our best R&B voices - is arguably one of the best songs P-Money's ever put his hand to. The quality continues, whether it's the atmospheric dance-fuelled instrumentals (The Soul, Angels), more pounding R&B (Dallas and Aaradhna on Say Yeah) or the rock- infused Falling Down with Pluto's Milan Borich.

Sure, P-Money seems to be working from a Coldplay template in his rock dabbling, but it works because it's so damn catchy. Infectious, accessible, commercial, yet unpredictable. Everything else pales in comparison.

I would wager that the hardcore hip-hop heads out there will disagree with Tom about the Big Things pt2 track, but hey, pretty sweet review!

Todays track is "Big Things Pt. 2" ft. Scribe, PNC and David Dallas.
One of the most persistent questions I get from fans is "Are you still working with Scribe?". The answer is of course, yes!
And this track along with 2 others on the album are solid proof of that.
This one captures the spirit of my first album, hence the title. A dose of straight up Hip-Hop, unapologetic in it's no-chorus/not for radio attitude.
This is the type of rap music I love. Each of the guys rip the beat to shreds. Which is your favourite verse? Who kills it the best?

The NZ Music Commission kicked off NZ Music Month early with an industry party last night in honor of all the NZ number one records of the decade '00 - '10.

Of the Top Ten biggest selling NZ singles in the last decade, our little indie label Dirty Records has had four of them.

That's 40% of the biggest selling singles in NZ since 2000 (Dirty Records started in '01).
And also I'd like to note that I produced and co-wrote 4 songs on the list! (Stand Up, Not Many, Everything & Stop The Music).

* EDIT - I incorrectly listed Rhythm Method as distributor of the "Always On My Mind" and "Everything" singles. When in fact those singles were (and are) digital only releases handled by our good friends at DRM. Rhythm Method distribute the physical CD albums containing those tracks but there was never any physical stock produced of the "Everything" or "Always On My Mind" singles. Which makes those sales achievements even more significant don't you think, go digital only! :)

Keeping It Together

Man, time is flyyyying for me right now! Can't believe the new album is out in 10 days time. Things are really heating up.
I'm doing my shows (see the Upcoming Gigs sidebar) and readying myself for another round of radio and TV promo, plus a few more press interviews.
We shot the video for my next single this week on wednesday with Mr. Greg Page (director of my previous clips "Stop The Music" and "Angels"). The day was quite intense as Greg got me doing a lot more acting again. Shit was quite emotional to be honest. You'll get to see the results of that in about a month or so.

I tell ya, it sure is a great feeling to own an independent record label and be free to choose how you create, market and promote your own music. But don't ever make the mistake of thinking it's easy to do this well. You have to be sharp, attentive and dedicated. Especially when you manage yourself, as I mostly do.
Here's how the responsibilities of releasing my record are shared for this project;
We have hired an independent promotions company to take our records to radio and TV plus co-ordinate all my interviews and promotional appearances (my trusty colleague whom usually does this stuff at Dirty is taking time off to raise a baby!). I have a booking agent to lock in my gigs and my homie Callum is responsible for marketing the album and handling most other label related stuff that needs attention (contracts, licensing deals etc etc). They are a great help of course but it still takes time and attention on my end to fulfill all the requests from my crew plus keep my calendar running smooth and myself healthy. Fitting everything in, answering everyone's questions and providing all the information, time and tools each party needs to do their jobs and keep this organism named P-Money in motion is much more than a full-time job.

It's important not to forget that as a human you need to balance work and home life in order to be truly successful (and stay healthy… and sane!). With a schedule like mine is at present it can be difficult to find time to eat, let alone foster any kind of meaningful relationships, but I do my best on both fronts.
It would be fair to say I'm feeling the pressure at the moment. But it's obviously something I've done before and can confidently navigate. This is technically album number 3 for me as P-Money the producer/artist and there are a number of other projects under my belt, courtesy of our other great acts at Dirty, that have contributed to my experience. So yes, I can handle it and fortunately this time I'm handling things far better than with any of my prior efforts. There have been no breakdowns yet! (believe it, they are par for the course in this game).

With age I've learnt to not be as precious about each minor detail and instead look at the overall picture. I've also learnt to trust others with aspects of my projects a bit more, so that helps with not overworking myself. Control freaks and perfectionists (like me) are very prone to pulling all nighters and suffering severe burn-out. Im speaking from experience here. Taking care of yourself, getting rest, and not over indulging, is of utmost importance.

In saying all this I still hold my work to the highest of standards in every area and I expect the best results from my colleagues. A leader must lead by example. And from my perspective, the artist should be the leader of their project (as I feel I am). It all starts with the energy placed into your craft, your performances, your recordings and the energy you share with people. Keep that energy positive, enthusiastic and genuine and watch it spread through your team/project and out into the world. Thats what I strive for and hopefully it's working here.

The journey continues. My album 'Everything' is out on May 3rd. All the best.

Plenty Shows

Had a great turnout for the show in Napier last saturday, sold out even! Thanks to all.
This coming weekend is gonna be hectic. I'm in Whakatane on sunday then catchin a flight direct
to Sydney for the I ♥ One 80 Project. Its a FREE gig in Hyde Park (see the poster below).
David Dallas and Aaradhna will be joining me for that one too. Should be dope.
Then the next weekend after that Im doing more Ozzie exploration,
performing with SCRIBE at Sin City on Thurs 22nd followed by more solo DJ sets in Perth, Newcastle and Darwin in that order.
It's busy times, hence the slow posting around here. I've got some things for ya this week though.
Gonna showcase the full album artwork and some extra bits later in the week.

I arrived in Sydney 3 hours ago. Hopped in a cab real quick (man I like the new 'smartgate' system at the airport, so swift) and jetted to my hotel. I think the cab driver had a malfunctioning CD player, either that or he really loves track 1 and 2 from The Gossip album.
I'm staying at a fairly tidy 3.5 star spot down the bottom of George St. And this is where I'll be based for the next week as we do promotional visits with radio, TV and online people to launch the new single "Say Yeah" ft David Dallas & Aaradhna in Australia.

I have the video in hand and will be debuting it online tomorrow morning. Check back here for that!
Post production on the clip went right down to the wire. Had me stressing, worried that I wouldn't have it in time for this trip. But thanks to the crew at Native Post we got it in the nick of time (although I think we may have killed one of the operators there who spent 3 consecutive 20 hour days on the job, madman!).

All the bits are coming together for the album now. Single kicking off at radio, about to hit TV, album master is in hand, review copies have gone out and we're just waiting on the final album artwork before things go into production. Production of the CD takes place about 6 weeks out from release so we can have finished stock to show the buyers from retail stores. The album is to be released digitally and physically in NZ on May 3rd. Not sure of the exact release date in Australia yet, but I'd like it to be somewhere around that same mark.

I also have 3 club gigs this week, Sin City - Gold Coast on Tues, Kit & Kaboodle - Sydney on Friday and Magic City - Brisbane on Saturday. Come check me at one of those if you're in the area. Those Gold Coast and Brisbane clubs are heavy on the R&B/Club vibe and the Sydney show I think is a little more suited to a diverse set, so I'll be mixing it up a bit in there. Nice one.

This here is the lead single from the new album. "Say Yeah" features David Dallas and Aaradhna on vocals. They killed it! The production credit is shared by Me and Ben Grymm. We made the beat for this at his place in London and then I finished the song with Dave and Radz back here in Auckland. Evan Short did his magic on the mixdown and there you have it. It's a dope combination of dance/house/rap/pop and rnb.

Zoooom...A week in the life.

Man this week has flown by! Kicked off with the 2 day video shoot, which went really well. There's a bit of work in post production to do on this one. We will air the finished product in a couple weeks time.

I caught a weird little nose and throat virus thing on wednesday morning (no doubt a result of letting the body relax after the big two weeks of work leading up to and culminating with the shoot). It's still hanging around bothering me but there's a ton of work to get on with so Im trying my best to battle it. Caught up with Scribe on wednesday and we spoke about his current and upcoming recording plans. Good to see him excited and motivated about his new project/s. Scribe currently features on new the J. Williams single "You Got Me" which debuted at No. 12 on the Rianz Top 40 chart this week. Congrats JW, Illegal Muzik and Scribe for that big debut.

My mate and co-director in Dirty Records & Dirty Mgmt, Mr. Callum August returned from a European work trip this week. There was a good amount of catching up to do with him as we suss out international plans for our various acts, including myself.
Thursday was more meetings, got a merchandise deal together (new tees and a re-run of the very popular NZ hats are on the way) plus web design meeting (yes, the blog is finally going to get some love and grow into a proper site, at last!).
PNC dropped in on thursday to lay some quick raps to a soundtrack song (I'm doing the score for a NZ short film at present). Then it was breakfast radio for 3 hours this morning on George FM and a trip to see my graphic design dude to do the artwork for my upcoming single. Got home from that and picked up the phone to co-ordinate promo and gig dates for next month in NZ and Oz. It's a very busy month ahead but right now I gotta finish up the tracks for the short film so I can tick that job off the list. Need some dinner though, when do I find time to eat?

As I mentioned on twitter earlier this week. I love my career, even when it gets hectic. But most importantly the one thing I'm most excited to share is that... I have new music on the way!

One From The Road

Sitting here staring into my coffee for a second at Gisborne Airport. The lone cafe takes up about half the terminal, the place is that small. I arrived a little early on purpose in order to grab some breakfast before my flight home. Strike one for me - V2 Cafe & Bar in Gisborne Airport don't do cooked breakfast. Shit.
So I ate the requisite ham and cheese croissant with much interest as to how you can heat a pastry in such a way that the cheese inside melts yet the exterior remains at a temperature just above freezing (in a grill no less!).

Alas my morning is not so triumphant but at least I'm not hungover. As I'm sure many of the happy customers who attended the show at Soho Bar last night may well be.
The venue was a sauna last night. So hot that my jeans were still soaked through this morning as I packed my bags to leave. Usually it takes a lot for me to break a sweat but last night I was dripping, it was so humid. I know it's gross but there is something special about djing in a super hot room with people goin crazy that adds to the intensity of the night. Just make sure you drink lots of water, preferably from a bottle. Sweat and condensation dripping into an open glass is not the one (pretty sure O.S.H. would agree!).

And now I await my flight home to Auckland, not to rest but to get set for our video shoot tomorrow. There is a fair bit of stuff to pull together, collecting props and sorting out wardrobe is my main job today. The perceived glamour of the music business may lead you to believe we have a huge staff of people to take care of these details for us, but no. In NZ, even with a reasonable budget, its a do-it-yourself affair.
We have a 2 day shoot ahead. I won't disclose the details of the song, treatment or the featured artists just yet but I will say its a P-Money record from my forthcoming album and if you follow me and/or some of my friends on twitter over the next couple days you may very well see it all unfold.

It's Friday...

And that means for people in NZ that it's Big Day Out day. While my friends and workmates are mostly all at Ericcson Stadium enjoying the festival atmosphere I am at home finalizing music for the forthcoming album.
We have pencilled in an April release date for the record and Im happy to say its pretty much complete. More about that soon.

I'm playin at this party next week in Sydney. It's a best of the 2000's theme (I refuse to use the term "~~noughties~~"). This party is presented by the good people from The Main Ingredients/Grindin and also features my man DJ MK all the way from London Town. The last Main Ingredients gig I did was the 90's theme and it was off the hook! Most recently they hosted David Dallas and Neil Armstrong for their Xmas Jam which was equally crazy. The Main Ingredients know how to throw a party so I'm really lookin forward to this one.
I do need your help with one thing though. Seeing as its a best of the 2000 theme, tell me what your most favourite Hip-Hop tracks of the past decade are and I will try and fit them in my set!

What My Last Gig Of The Decade Looked Like

Rhythm & Vines Festival, Gisborne, Dec 29th 2009.
What you can see: A few thousand people plus me bathed in light at center stage. And that green stuff off behind the stage would be the grape vines (for those whom are unfamiliar with it, this festival takes place in a large vineyard). An amazing night and a very fitting send off to the decade. Superbly memorable.

Just a quick note to welcome in the New Year. Rhythm & Vines festival was crazy and if anyone has pics or video from my set on the 29th please post a link in the comments, that would be much appreciated. It was an incredible night. Definitely a great way to sign off for the year.

I spent NYE with some close friends. It was the first New Years that I haven't worked in years. And it was a lot of fun.
Lots in store for the year ahead. New album is on the way, plus a side project with someone you know quite well, I'm doing the score for a short film and there is some more travel in the works too so we'll see what else comes along with that.

My family is not religious but we do like to celebrate our Christmas by spending time together, exchanging gifts and eating a lot of food. This year I'm off to the beach to kick it with my sister and the fam and do more of the same.
My overseas friends always trip out on the fact it's summer time for us down here in the southern hemisphere. Summer christmas is what I know and I wouldn't change it for the world. Bring on the sun, surf and bbq's. Merry Xmas!!

Killa Kombo - Askew x P-Money

My friend, and incredibly talented graffiti writer, Askew asked me to get involved with this Killa Kombo video for Australian paint company Ironlak. With the concept being that the writer paints the producer's name and the producer provides the soundtrack.
So me and Askew teamed up. He went out and did a bunch of pieces using my name. And I made 3 beats to match the images. Shouts to Warren Green who shot and edited the video, great job!

PS. All the beats were made on Battery 3 and Logic Express using a Macbook and USB turntable while couch surfing at my mates place in London.

PNC 's Raptor Suit Craziness

So the story goes that someone snuck in to the Dirty Records office and stole the Raptor suit from us. It was quite an odd occurrence. I knew something was afoot with the mysterious disappearance of our beloved promo dinosaur.
Well it turns out some rather sneaky fan took off with PNC's suit to get up to mischief and surprise us with this here in return. The video is pretty self explanatory. Take a look... I can't quite believe it!

If you google hard enough you will find there are a few other people walking around with the moniker "P-Money". The best known of these, besides myself, would have to be the South London Grime MC P-Money. While in the Uk I had the chance to sit down with MC P-Money courtesy of the good people at RWD Magazine. And here is a transcript of that conversation...

One’s a hip hop DJ turned producer from New Zealand who’s best mates with Zane Lowe. “Don’t worry about it, it’s a set up,” UK spitter P Money brushes off RWD’s queries as to why he has dressed to almost match his New Zealand namesake who adds, “We planned this before we came.” Hmmm... we turned up today thinking we were gonna witness a fight to see who would claim bragging rights for the moniker, but instead P and P are acting like they’re best buds. Let’s see if we can stick our noses in and change all that...

RWD: So P Money meet P-Money... fight!

P-Money (NZ): (laughs) Nah, we’re cool man. Actually I wanted to learn some stuff about you, like what’s the name on your birth certificate?

P Money (UK): Paris. That’s what the ‘P’ stands for. My full name is Paris Williams

P-Money (NZ): That’s crazy we have the same initials. My name is Peter Wadams. So we’ve got even more in common. What’s your date of birth?

P Money (UK): 8/04/88.

P-Money (NZ): For real? I’m 10 years older than you mate. 25/02/1978.

P Money (UK): When did you start calling yourself P-Money?

P-Money (NZ): For myself it was in around ’98.

P Money (UK): For me it was 2000. At secondary school.

P-Money (NZ): Was it a name that you adopted for yourself or were people calling you that already?

P Money (UK): I was calling that myself already cos that was my motive from young. I just always wanted money. In school I would always come in with something new and people were like ‘P, you’re made of Money!’ What about you?

P-Money (NZ): I was trying to find a name for when I was DJing. Someone called me Cash Money as a joke in reference to DJ Cash Money from Philadelphia. I thought ‘He’s got the coolest name’, and he’s a dude who I aspired to be like, so I just took P from my initials and that’s how I got P Money. So it’s kind of a nod to Cash Money as well as a nickname.

RWD: So when did you guys find out about each other?

P Money (UK): A couple of years ago, but a lot this year. I’ve been getting emails saying ‘I need that tune’ and I’m like ‘What tune? It’s not my tune!’ And then people will be ringing me saying ‘Oh you’ve got a video on TV’ and I’m like ‘No I haven’t’ And then recently I put a video on there and everyone’s just getting mixed up.

P-Money (NZ): Oh that’s really shit right?

P Money (UK): I’ve never found it annoying except when people are bugging me for the song and it’s not even my tune!

P-Money (NZ): Is it frustrating cos they don’t understand the obvious differences between the sounds?

P Money (UK): Yeah! But I don’t find it annoying that we’ve got the same name cos I’ve seen about six different people called P-Money. But you’re the only one who has stood out and I’ve seen doing stuff, and I’ve actually heard songs by.

RWD: We’ve noticed that when you Google ‘P-Money’, the UK one is at the top of the list.

P-Money (NZ): Really? I come up first back home. Maybe it’s sensitive to which country you do the search from?

RWD: What about the other P Moneys? Are they gonna come through?

P-Money (UK): Nah, they don’t stand a chance. No chance.

P-Money (NZ): It’s too late for them. If you Google ‘P-Money’ then only us two will come up.

RWD: P-Money (UK), have you ever thought about making a tune called Everything and stealing some of P-Money (NZ)’s download hits?

P Money (UK): Yeah I was like ‘Shall I just put my name on the PRS’?

P-Money (NZ): Don’t worry we’ve already got that locked. But it’s funny cos isn’t your mixtape called Money Over Everyone? Cos I had someone at home who’s a grime fan say to me ‘I just got sent your CD man’ and when I saw it and I was like ‘Nah man what are you talking about?’ So your record’s getting serviced back home so that’s a good thing right? People know about it.

P Money (UK): Yeah. Sometimes I get emails from places like New Zealand and Australia saying they can’t get hold of my music, so occasionally I’ve sent people stuff. So I did kind of know that there were fans there.

RWD: P Money (UK) What do you think of P-Money (NZ)’s song Everything?

P Money (UK): I actually like it. I’ve heard it a few times and seen the video a few times and I always wondered, ‘Is it him singing?’ Cos people said he was a producer, so I was confused. I do like the song though.

P-Money (NZ): Well it’s not me singing. It’s a young cat from back home called Vince Harder. I’ve always done hip hop and then I started branching out and working with singers; I did a song with Akon which was really popular back home, but it wasn’t until a couple of years later that I found a singer who I actually liked. So Vince and I have done a lot of music together.

RWD: So what’s next for you guys?

P Money (UK): I’m currently recording tracks for an EP I’m releasing which is gonna be followed by an album titled Duality. There’s no release dates yet, but it’s mainly explaining the two sides of my life; doing music and what’s outside of it.

P-Money (NZ): I’ll be following up Everything with another single in the UK and then working towards a new album for next year. It’ll be in that vein of dance music with a hip hop influence. So expect cool breaks, samples and good vibes. Predominantly I’m working with my Kiwi artists, but we’ll see who else I can get in terms of international guests.

RWD: We know a really good MC from over here called P Money?

P-Money (NZ): Yeah I’ve heard of him. I saw him on YouTube! But, who knows? I think we need to hear more of each other’s music, but he seems like a really nice guy. That just ruins your whole story doesn’t it? No tension, no controversy.

P Money (UK): Yeah they wanted a fight.

RWD: Who us?!? No way!!

P-Money (NZ): Yeah they were trying to set us up!

P Money (UK): What you don’t know is before we come here we planned it all out.

RWD: A few of your fans have been going back and forth online though...

P Money (UK): Really?

P-Money (NZ): Yeah every third comments on the Everything video is someone debating who’s the ‘real’ P Money, so I just leave it up to them.

RWD: It’s jokes. Check it out...

P-Money (NZ): Yeah there’s people from the UK asking ‘Where was P Money on this song?’ They’ve watched the whole thing waiting for you to drop a 16 bar or something.

RWD: If you did a track together, what would you call yourselves?

P Money (UK): Just P Money.

Samoa Tsunami Relief Concert

After the tragic events in Samoa last week, a group of top New Zealand entertainers have rallied together for a massive benefit concert on Monday 19th October 2009 at the Vector Arena in Auckland.
When the Tsunami hit Samoa last week, it personally affected Scribe and Savage who lost their family villages and family members in the disaster. Along with Dawn Raid, Oscar Kightley and Ole Maiava, they rapidly organized a dream line up of top NZ musicians who had no hesitation in donating their performances to this worthy cause.
All businesses, personnel and artists have given their services for free, therefore 100% of the proceeds will be donated to Samoa.

We urge all New Zealanders to support this event to aid our fellow citizens of Samoa.

So I've got a new single done right. It's time to follow up from the 12 month long monster project that was the Everything single.
"Everything" took me from "got nothing to lose/aint shit else goin on right now" status at home in Auckland to "holy crap I have the number one single in NZ/summer is looking good" to "jeezus, bro my tracks on flippin Radio1/Time to pack my bags for London!!". (And not to mention taking my man Vince Harder from "hey bro nice to meet you/let's do a song" to "bro you have a real shot at being a bonafide recording artist/lets keep making the hits!" status).

I've found the most important thing to do when you find success (on whatever scale) is to keep going and work harder. We rode the Everything wave to it's crest and now, instead of letting it guide us gently in to the shore, it's time to peddle back out and catch the next wave! (what an analogy! ...and I don't even surf).

The ripple starts here at 1930 (GMT) with the world premiere of "Love Alone" ft. Vince Harder by P-Money on Zane Lowe's show at BBC Radio 1. He's picked the single as his "Hottest Record In The World Right Now". Couldn't ask for a better start than that.

I think it's due time for an overhaul of the blog template. Yeah im still on blogger (one day I'll have a real website!) but I was kinda done with the black background with bright coloured titles thing. It's just not the best for long reads. And, considering I use twitter for those brief thoughts and tidbits of information, I figured a more traditional gray-on-white design would be easier on the eyeballs when it's time to expand upon a topic here in the blog. Should the mood take me of course.
I may also have to start changing all my images to black and white to maintain the design esthetic. Im quite particular like that.

In tribute to my man Grand Master Roc Raida. Here are the 2 tracks that Raida contributed to my 2004 album "Magic City".
"Represent" is a scratch break produced and conceptualized by Roc Raida for the album. I initially asked Raida to scratch over one of my tracks for the record. But after checking them out he decided it would be better if he made a new beat especially for us to cut too (I think my tracks were a little too downtempo to provide the proper energy needed for a scratch track). I was more than happy to let Raida take over production duties for this one. That actually makes Roc Raida the first, and only, other producer to do beats on one of my albums besides myself. He may have been best known for his beat juggling and body tricks but here Raida showcases his amazing scratching ability. We go back and forth, 4 bars each, Raida kicks off each verse and I answer him in 4 bar blocks (I did my best to keep up!). Raida does the hook scratches here too.

Represent - P-Money & Grand Master Roc Raida

Although deadly serious behind the turntables, the other side to Raida was total comedy. He loved to make jokes and could see humour in almost any situation. With that in mind I thought it would be fun to recruit one of his characters, the super gangsta thug rapper Thug muthafuckin Doug, to do a skit on the album. The following was included as a hidden track on the Magic City album...still makes me laugh to this day... thanks Raida.

Nb. Raida did both these joints on the strength. Further testament to how dope a guy he really was.

A Postcard From Here

So here I am in London partaking in the age-old tradition of Kiwi musicians making it big abroad. We're definitely off to a good start and fortunately, thanks to some great friends, settling in has been no trouble at all. The UK single release of "Everything" went quite well (although truth be told it fell just a touch short of our lofty aspirations!). We peaked at 16 on the iTunes dance singles chart and held in there for about a week. Radio support has been excellent and the track is still buzzing. My name is definitely in the mix over here so the time is right to roll out single number 2! (I will have more news about that and when you can get your ears on it early next week).
I've got some good gigs coming up with Zane Lowe on his DJ Hero Tour and with the Stanton Warriors - Stanton Sessions Tour. And in my spare time I've also been able to go digging and get in the studio a bit with my homie Ben Grymm. Good stuff.
My laptop is with me at all times so work is still getting done. I managed to finish up a dope little Duck Sauce meets David Dallas blend the other day. If you heard my guest mix for MistaJam you would have heard an early version of it. Dave will be posting the completed version of that very very soon.
I'm still a bit sad about my homie Roc Raida passing away. That was some rough news. This year has been heavy man.
But all in all what it says to me is that we should make the most of each and every day. And that's why Im here!

Woohoo A-Trak is coming to town! But I must draw your attention to one thing that is wrong with the above poster.

Regrettably, I am NOT performing at this show. I would love to be there, but I will not be. I will be overseas at the time of the show.
For the sake of transparency; The show was offered to me but I gave notice (in July) that I would not be available on the said date due to travel commitments. Somewhere in the chain of command a mistake has been made and my name is on the poster. Sorry for anybody who was looking forward to my involvement with this gig. Im kinda bummed myself to be missing it.
But hey, the main event is A-TRAK! He is, in my honest opinion, the best all around DJ in the world today. Style, selection, tricks, scratches, he's got it all. Go see a living legend at work!

It's a pretty standard (to slow) week as far as the number of tracks is concerned but I'd say the ratio of good tunes vs trash is pretty good.
I particularly recommend the Duck Sauce, Raekwon "10 Bricks" and both Nipsey Hussle joints. The Jay-Z stuff is mainly for archival purposes but I am anticipating his upcoming album.

Most of these tracks can be found on the net somewhere if you know where to look.

I've been yapping on about Radio 1 a fair bit lately (sorry, but I truely am very excited about having my song on the radio, anywhere for that matter!) but what I almost forgot to post was the incredible fact that we have earned A-LIST Rotation on BBC 1Xtra!! the BBC's own Black Music station.
That's a pretty awesome achievement for anyone, let alone a white dude from New Zealand! Much respect to the whole 1xtra staff. They showed love first waaay back in the day when Me and Scribe made a little dip into the UK market [circa 05/06], and they were also giving heavy spins to my joint with Akon "Keep On Callin" from the Magic City album. I remember visiting Rodney P & Skitz when they had a show up there too. So major props to all the DJ's at 1xtra who keep their ear to the streets and have been lookin out for the kid! Lovely.

We moved up to B-List on Radio 1 today! Not bad for a song recorded in my spare room (Shout out to Evan @ Mercury Audio!). This weeks full playlist is viewable here.
It is a pretty crazy feeling to have a record popping on the other side of the world. All I know about it is from emails, phonecalls and the odd bit of streaming radio. But I wanna catch the vibe in person! There's nothing like hearing your track in a club or on the street in another country and watching people react positively to it. It's a whole different buzz and one that Im hanging out for once I get to London. Only a few weeks left til I return. I wanna go today! Funnily enough even my Horoscope (i dont read those things usually) told me to chill, all will happen in good time. So Im taking that advice, all in good time.

The Balance Of Things

It seems like everyday I get some more great news of our progress in the UK. The team over there are hitting each target with precision and efficiency, which I am very grateful for. All in all it's quite exciting!
A quick review of this mornings communications revealed that we have now moved up to a C-List Rotate on Radio 1.
We are shooting for the stars with this project and I intend to work even harder to make the most of every opportunity that arises as a result of this success. I give big thanks to every one of my supporters, from my inner circle to my friends and fans here and abroad. Keep that positive mentality!

This is also a moment of reflection for me. This current upswing in popularity and career growth is in complete contrast to the experiences of the first half of my year. I don't usually divulge personal details on this blog but to further highlight what I mean I feel it's necessary to share.

Early in the year one of my Grandmothers passed away, now for many people that's a very emotional and heart wrenching event. But for me unfortunately I'd had no dealings with her or my Granddad for over 15 years and the loss was really quite odd. I didn't feel sad, I didn't feel much at all really. Yet it made me think a lot about my family and how I associate with them.
Not long after that I found out my best mates Dad was diagnosed with Cancer. Quite a shock to everyone it was. Then I found out another one of my good homie's had a family member dealing with the same thing.
Literally 2 weeks following that news, while I was on tour, my Father had a heart attack. He survived it, but I don't need to tell you I was worried for the worst! For a moment I was frozen, didn't know what to do and it felt like death was getting closer and closer.
And then the worst news ever, my best mates father succumbed to the cancer he was battling. He was a great man and father to his kids. He used to coach me in basketball, I felt close to him and his family. It was a big loss.

I guess Im lucky in this regard but I can barely remember going to more than 1 or 2 funerals in my entire life. Death hasn't shown its face much around here. So these events definitely shook me up a bit.

And then the closer, maybe a month or so after all that I get news that my grandfather had killed himself. That is some out of it shit to hear I tell you. I can only assume that the pain and loneliness of being without his partner of all these years (my grandmother whom I first mentioned) was too much strain to bare in his twilight years. The old boy chucked it in.
I wish I could have seen him once more. It may have been awkward but I would have liked to see his face, and maybe ask him if anyone in our family ever played music (a question I've never asked, and I'm a bit of an anomaly when it comes to musical ability in our gene pool).

Anyway, its safe to say I/we had a pretty sucky start to the year.
Now these current achievements may not console those feelings of loss but it definitely helps to have some good shit happen in your life to restore the balance of things.
And like my man Jeru says "when the pendulum swings in favour of one it eventually swings in favour of it's opposite, thus the balance of the universe is maintained". Wise words those.

Last Friday saw my welcome return to the friday morning breakfast show on George FM after a 2 week hiatus. It was great to be back in the studio with Nick and Murry once again. One of my stories coming back from overseas was the chance encounter I had with the Legend that is Nile Rodgers (my friend Zane will attest to this). So, fittingly, we diverted from our usual playlist of all that is new and (reasonably leftfield) in dance music and spun the classic of all classic funk/disco/hip-hop bassline tunes "Good Times" by Chic (of which Nile is producer, bassist, songwriter etc). This spawned a fervent discussion and subsequent request for suggestions as to what would be your top 5 bassline grooves of all time. We opened the TXT lines to our listeners suggestions and I promptly compiled and executed a 15 minute mini-mix of everyone's favourites!

Welcome To The Radio 1 Playlist

Due to some (fairly manageable) jetlag, I woke up very early this morning to the news that my single "Everything" (featuring the incredibly talented Vince Harder) had just been added to the BBC Radio 1 playlist! If you've been following this blog you will know very well by now that we've been steadily gaining interest, love and airplay for the single in the UK since late last year. My goal since March was to get on the Radio 1 playlist, and here we f**kin are!! Next move is of course to move up the list and continue to grow and advance etc etc... and we shall get to that.

This news comes as the perfect accompaniment to what was a considerably successful jaunt to the UK. To fill you in, about two weeks ago me and my trusty partner in all thing's 'Dirty' (Dirty Records and Management that is) Mr. Callum August took to the skies and winged our way across seas to my ancestral country of origin. Our mission was two-fold, to meet with the great team who have been enlisted to work our single and to meet with other interested parties as to their potential involvement in my international career.
It's fair to say I have every confidence in our UK team and today's news further reinforces that faith. Go team! I'm also very glad to have made the many new acquaintances we did in the past week.

I've been gearing myself up for a move to the UK for quite some time now and this past week (and todays incredible news!) has definitely increased the urgency of those plans. It's time to pack my bags. I'm looking forward to using this current momentum to spread my music far and wide. The door has been opened and I'm stepping in. Hi folks, nice to meet you!

Just a quick note to let you know how excited I am about our progress on UK radio waves this week. The P-Money single "Everything" ft. Vince Harder received it's first playlist spin on Jo Whiley's show on BBC Radio 1 last night (load the player and skip to the 56min mark) and went straight on to playlist today at 1Xtra (the UK's leading Black Music station). [edit] Not to mention the man Trevor Nelson gave it a spin on July 4th on BBC 1 also!

This is real big stuff for us. Infact I'm curious to know how many New Zealand acts have attained this kind of airplay in the UK?
Not in a spiteful way at all. Please fill me in oh wise watchers of the web... Off the top of my head I know OMC smashed it back in the day and I'd make a guess that Fat Freddy's Drop got decent spot plays on specialist shows. But as for playlist on a UK station? We might be breaking new ground here.

How To Succeed In Life & DJ Battles

The 2009 NZ DMC Champs are taking place on 08/08/09 at Zen Bar in Auckland. That means you have just over 4 weeks to design your 6 minute masterpiece and take that title.

Those that know me well will recognize my expertise in this area.
There isn't a year that goes by where fans don't encourage me to enter again. I gotta be honest and say that competing in DJ Battles is simply not on my radar at present. But I do see it as a highly significant (dare i say 'necessary'?) part of any Hip-Hop DJ's apprenticeship. The Battle is where you earn your respect, establish your profile and most importantly, hone your craft. I encourage any aspiring DJ to challenge themselves and ENTER. The rewards from this unique experience are immeasurable.

So with this blog, instead of showing off what I can do on a pair of turntables, I thought I would share with you the method which I used to prepare, compose and rehearse my battle winning sets during my competitive years. Thus...

Prepare, Compose and Rehearse. Approaching your practice sessions with solid structure is key. This is how I break it down:

1. PREPARATION (Practice) - Any time you are practicing is preparation for the next battle. Putting your self through drills, repeating the same scratch or beat juggle pattern over and over until you have it locked, is very important. You should be doing this ALL the time (not just near battle time). Jamming and fine tuning the things you know plus pushing yourself to master new techniques is essential during practice. I would easily commit 4-6 hours a day practicing. Not on any one routine necessarily, but just honing my instrument.

2. COMPOSITION - I would begin the process of composing my battle routines as soon as the competition date had been announced (if not before!). I'd make the proper enquiries regarding the battle format (ie. how long are the sets, how many do I need to prepare so that I am equipped for every round etc..) and then the creative process would begin.
Because you have been practicing you should already have an arsenal of cuts, scratches and tricks that you can apply to any record. So now is the time to have fun selecting what records sound good and discovering which tracks have the elements you need to create a dope, entertaining and impressive routine.
Depending on how far away the battle was I might spend months on composing a whole bunch of routines. But in the case of NZ DMC 2009, YOU have 4 weeks to create and perform a 6 minute routine, so I would give you a strict 2 weeks to compose all the pieces you need, because you are going to need the remaining 2 weeks for...

3. REHEARSAL - This is the MOST important and oft overlooked part of preparing for a successful battle performance. Too often DJ's approach the stage with routines only composed the night before and proceed to forget parts, lose their cool and/or blame technical problems for the simple fact they were not well rehearsed and therefore fucked their routine up.
By now if you have spent 2 weeks composing then you should have settled on a final 6 minute routine. So what I advise you to do is line up all the records for your routine, in order, in a big stack next to the turntables. Then grab a stop watch, set it to countdown 6 minutes, and go through your routine. Once. Without stopping. If you make a mistake keep going, you are on the clock!
Now review your performance. How many mistakes did you make? What parts didn't work? Address all the issues. And run through it again. And again, and again. Until its running smoothly. It might take days to get it smooth, but you have two weeks so stop stressing and go over it again.

Now once you are able to get through the whole set smoothly with NO mistakes you can smile, give yourself a brief pat on the back and then continue to rehearse the same routine over and over and over again. Until your hands hurt, until your back hurts, until your head hurts, until you know the thing forwards, backwards and are borderline losing your mind from repeating this damn process. Then grab a glass of water and do it again.
During this 2 weeks if you find yourself at home sitting on the couch watching shortland street, get up off your ass and do your routine again. And when you're reading my blog and twitter and bullshitting online, slap yourself and GO REHEARSE!!!
If you follow these steps then by battle time you will have your set committed to memory so well that of the million things that can (and quite possibly will) go wrong on the night your set will not be one of them! Even if the needle skips, you will know how to get back on track so quickly that no-one will notice but you. Trust me. I know.

I strongly advise you to stick to this plan and spend the next 2 weeks composing routines using the techniques you ALREADY KNOW and can DO WELL. Don't create routines beyond your current ability. If there is an amazing trick that you only get right once every 20 times, leave it out and put that on the list of things to practice in advance of the NEXT battle.

Use the skills you have NOW to compose routines you can pull of cleanly.

Make a dope fun set that sounds good to you and to OTHERS.

Rehearse your set and enter that battle with the calmness and confidence that only comes from being on top of your shit.

Your goal is to perform flawlessly the material you have prepared.

Today I watched some of the BET Awards live via Maseo's (of De La Soul) Ustream channel and then watched a rip of Jay-Z's latest video (premiered on US tv immediately following the awards) via Onsmash. Both of these events were broadcast on BET. A black entertainment network that has never aired in New Zealand. I know most (or at least a lot) of us do shit like this daily but man... the awards live and the Jay video only minutes after its first airing? Im just saying... the internet is FAST.

If you own a pay-tv network, step your game up (immediately!), or go the way of the recorded music industry... oh and same goes for movies, y'all are f**ked already. Evolve or die. :)

Flashback - Making "Not Many"

The story of Scribe's Not Many (produced by yours truly) is an interesting one, the writing and recording took place in a number of stages.

Scribes lyrics for the 2 verses on the original version were written years before we recorded the song "Not Many". (I need to check with Scribe as to exactly when they were penned, I think they were possibly 3 years old by the time we recorded the album in 2003). To the best of my knowledge, the famous hook "How many dudes you know roll like this..." etc. was written a few months to a year before we recorded the song aswell.
I composed the music in about an hour or two in the bedroom of my flat on Khyber Pass. Scribes lyrics were not written to the beat I made and the beat was composed with no knowledge of those particular lyrics, but we made them fit together perfectly.

We recorded Scribes vocals to the music I had made in about 2 hours. Scribe paired the old verse lyrics with the 'Not Many' hook to form the body of the song. Together we added some intro adlibs and the outro chants "next time you come on down to North Canterbury...." to complete the vocal parts of the track.
I then set about mixing the track with our engineer Chris Chetland. I recall the mix came together unusually quickly for the original version. It was at most a 6 hour session with a couple of additional tweaks needed the next day (a couple more hours). Mastering took some more time. I think we revisited the master about 2 or 3 times. And with that the original mix of "Not Many" was complete.

"Not Many - The Remix" was created a couple months later. We needed a second single for Scribe. "Not Many" was becoming a popular track but it was already available on the Stand Up single. So instead of making a video for the original, and essentially selling the same song twice, I decided we should do a remix. The remix would retain all the elements that made the original song popular (same beat & same hook) but we would add some featured guest verses and a new verse from Scribe. We set an incredibly short timeline to turn this thing around because we needed another video on TV quick to push Scribe's momentum to the next level. (aside: i dont think Ive worked so hard and with as much urgency to complete any project as I did with this record, this shit was intense). From concept to completion was about 10 days. The first thing I did was contact Savage and ask him if he would write a verse for the remix and then I called Con-Psy (aka David Dallas) to see if he would take part. They both agreed and began writing their parts. The 4 of us got together at The Lab in Mt. Eden to record the new verses. That session was about 6 hours long and I was left with 3 new verses and some adlibs from each rapper. None of these parts were recorded in the order you hear them on the finished song. My job then was to arrange all the new vocals and edit the beat to match. I spent the following 2 days and nights working around the clock to get the track to a finished state that I was happy with and deliver to our video director in time to map out a shot-list for the impending shoot.
The guys (Scribe, Savage, David) heard my finished arrangement for the first time on the friday before our sunday video shoot and had 2 days to memorize the song for their performance in the video. The shoot was really fun and about 14 hours long, a one day shoot.

The next day after the shoot I was back in the lab to finish the mixdown. The mix was already half done of course because we didn't change any of the music. We instead spent another day getting the new vocals sitting right with the original recording's chorus. A new master was done and we eq'ed it a little harder than on the original so it had the intensity I was going for. All up, the new mix and master was about 2 days work.

We put it out and woohoo, big success! The track was dope, the video awesome and the movement reached fever pitch. Scribe, Savage, P-Money & Con-Psy became household names and we all lived happily ever after lol.

My man Scribe came over to the house tonight. We haven't kicked it in ages. It was really good to catch up. He was a little late getting here from the airport so I decided to mess around and make some beats while waiting. I hooked up this one particular record, that I had been saving for him, and had it ready to go once he arrived. Scribe jumped on it and we recorded this demo about half an hour ago. We like it a lot. The Dream In Studio

This 'in studio' clip shows The Dream composing and recording 2 tracks from his latest album Love VS Money. I really like that album and enjoyed watching parts of the process exposed here.

They claim both these tracks were completed in 2 hours, which I find debatable. Especially considering how many takes he does on some simple lines here. At that rate the vocals alone would take 2-3 hours to record for each song.
And speaking of vocals, you can hear he's off pitch pretty much the whole time. It's a far cry from the perfection of the final recordings. The engineer is putting in some serious overtime on auto-tune or melodyne for this one. This doesnt detract from how great a songwriter The Dream is, but it does shine a bright light on his limitations as a vocalist.
Not knocking The Dream at all, he's my favourite R&B artist at the moment. And I also found it interesting that he uses the MPC3000 to program his beats, who knew?!
